This course seeks to understand the historical, political, social and cultural settings of social problems in Africa, giving redefinition to the traditional view of social problems themselves. Students are challenged to understand the construction of their own identities against the backdrop of colonialism, apartheid and market capitalism. Critical insights are gained into the sometimes conflicting agendas of development.
