2nd Degree Option

2nd Degree Option

Second degree options at the SA-German Centre for Development Research in the MADM, MPA and MDS courses

1. Requirements for the MA in Development Management as second degree (full-time):
Students who wish to obtain a second degree have to

  • submit a separate Master's thesis which substantially differs from your master's thesis for ISD/SoG and is written according to the respective institutional requirements
  • complete additional coursework (as follows):
  • Second degree students have to complete all compulsory exams of the Bochum Programme in the following courses: "Comparative Economic Systems" and/or "Social Policy"; "Analytical and Research Methods"; 4 elective courses from the MADM which are not counted for the final MADM grade (or only 2, if both courses "Comparative Economic Systems" and "Social Policy" have been completed.)
  • The number of required elective exams for completion of the Bochum Programme can be reduced to the extent to which comparable courses of a partner programme at UWC have been completed. Recognition is only possible for courses which are not counted for the final UWC degree. The number of courses done with a partner programme at UWC for recognition within the Bochum Programme is limited to 50% of credit equivalents from elective exams of the Bochum Programme. Students have to apply for recognition of the courses with the board of examiners of the Bochum Programme.

Selection requirements from ISD and SOG:

  • Students who have completed their coursework, as the MADM course is sometimes presented at the same time as the ISD and SOG honours and masters courses
  • Students whose research proposals have also been accepted
  • The supervisor of these students also has to agree

Selection requirements from the IEE in Bochum:

  • Registration is only possible if the average grade of your masters coursework at UWC to date is an upper 2nd (70%) and above in the S A system.
  • You should have some professional experience in a relevant field related to development management or have done an internship equivalent.
