Approaches to and strategies of rural development are critically analyzed within the framework of contemporary dominant theoretical orientations. Issues relating inter alia to rural economic stagnation, land reform and rural finance will be dealt within the context of the livelihood approach and government policy frameworks. Strong emphasis is placed on sustainable development within the context of poverty reduction strategies.
